DESN 132A—PERSPECTIVE & RENDERING SYSTEMS I |  FALL 2020  |  T/TH 4:00–6:45PM  |  ONLINE (AMI)

P2 | WATCH DESIGN

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Learning to draw/design Watches

helps students focus on the

rules of horizontal
cylinders or vertical face ellipses.

Choose and a single brand identity
for your product line, ie. Porsche Design,
Diesel, H&M, REI, Oakley, etc. Some
are provided below, but you may choose
your own, but do not invent a brand.

Watches MUST use analog-style
hands with traditional orientations of 12-3-6-9 cardinal time markers.

All presentation sheets will need to be coordinated such that it is clear
they are a complete and unified Brand presentation. Be specific.

SCHEDULE

PART 1. EXPLORATION OF FORM GENERATION

Start with the principal geometries (boxes/cubes, ellipses, cylinders, cones, sphericals, etc.), then modify the forms with control to create complexity and interest while obeying the rules of perspective.

Merge/add forms, subtract geometries, round edges, bevel/chamfer
edges, etc.

Add "parting" and "separation" lines to articulate surface or material separations. A sofa has cushions, tufting, etc.

Scale is relative. Your objects should make sense relative to each other for your product. If you choose to do headphones and ear buds, make sure the ear buds are in the foreground and drawn large.

VERTICAL REFLECTIONS

Add the suggestion of reflections as if they are sitting on a polished display counter to add visual interest.

When you render the reflections, be sure to keep them lighter than the objects and do not ink the edges; keeps the viewer's attention on the object.

SHADOW CASTING

Use a basic shadow casting method add graphic depth, based on the rules, either to the left or right of the forms.

PART 2. RENDERING & COMPOSITION

Using your markers and add final details and textures as necessary
with Prismacolor pencils.

Render contrasting qualities and/or materiality changes:

Matte vs Polished/Chrome

Opaque vs Transparent

Rough vs Smooth - Remember, rough will affect the profile of the surface

Don't worry about the rough layout lines in your draft studies. When you render much of it will become less noticeable and also adds interest to the drawing. Graphite especially can add warmth to your marker work when done well.

DELIVERABLES

Initial sketch in grey markersWith a grey marker base, it's easy to add a color tint. Note, depending on the color richness, sometimes it's best to lay down color first, then follow up with deep tones after, yellow and other vibrant colors are most sensitive.Add some final touches of glare with white paint and white Prismacolor Premier pencil, and feel free to sign your work.In Photoshop, use Hue & Saturation to color cast your design as desired (green). In Photoshop, use Hue & Saturation to color cast your design as desired (blue).3 - 5<>Easily montage an array of design options in Photoshop. Generally I find it better to create the "graphic background" separately which gives me more flexibility in the composition in Photoshop. There's nothing wrong with working in orthographic views as well, they're more practical most of the time.

TUTORIALS & HOW-TO GUIDES

POPULAR BRANDS

This is not an exhaustive list. Use another brand you like, but it must be paired with the clock brand you've chosen.

GETTING STARTED

Watching others sketch is a great way to learn, Spencer Nugent, Sketch-a-Day, is an excellent place to start.

DIGITAL SKETCHING

If you have the tools AND
are up to speed with digital sketching programs, then
feel free to use it with or instead of markers.

STUDENT WORK EXAMPLES | WATCHES

STUDENT LEARNING OBJECTIVES (SLOs)

  1. To gain strong understanding of fundamental forms,
  2. To gain understanding of shadow-casting logic,
  3. To gain understanding of mirror reflection logic,
  4. To develop marker rendering skills and techniques for Industrial Design,
  5. To enhance and refine line quality and line weights,
  6. To Incorporate Information Graphics as a descriptive device in representation.

GRADING AND EVALUATION RUBRIC

The following Rubric will apply in assessment of the student's work product, presentation, and/or process:
