P4 | TRANSPORTATION DESIGN

PROJECT OVERVIEW

An important part of our human lives involves how we move from place to place, and bridge sometimes very large distances. Aircraft, trains, automobiles, watercraft, and bicycles are our most familiar, however new modes emerge all the time, including today civilian transport to space, hovercraft vehicles, and even jet-packs, but also golf cart/electric vehicles, large livery vehicles, and Segways all fall under the umbrella of Transportation Design. Not all are practical for daily commuting today, but a lot change over the course of our lifetimes.

Entertainment design (games, films, sci-fi, etc.) is valid, see under specific vehicle types for more related to this direction. Be sure to script (brief) the narrative which drives your design in this case.

Choose a mode of transportation that engages your particular area of interest (major).

ALL IS NOT EXTERIOR SURFACING.

THERE ARE MANY OPPORTUNITIES FOR INTERIOR DESIGNERS.

  • Luxury Yachts
  • Luxury Airplanes (Gulf Stream, Boeing, Jet Aviation) - Key spaces: Public > Private. Office area / Entertainment Lounge / Conference Room / Dining Area / Master bedroom suite /
  • Car/Vehicle Interiors are often designed by interior designers, not only "industrial or product" designers, interior designers are often better bringing tactility and humanity to the surfaces we interact with, upholstery, stitching, contrast of textures and color palette.

STYLE

As a type of drawing, this exercise will emphasize the Emotive or Persuasive Rendering. A true show-piece for one's vision. While photo-realistic rendering is a classic designer's show piece it is even more appreciated today given the ease, speed, and precision of computer graphic rendering.

Matching the realism of a master photo (photorealism) is an excellent goal, however it should not be the student's only goal. Students should use this exercise as an opportunity to explore atmospheric perspective, dramatic lighting effects, and push technique for more stylized and expressive effect.

SCHEDULE

Week 1: Begin with basic Layout Construction (underlay) and Research Reference aesthetic language, brand culture, identity, etc.

20 preliminary sketches, approx 8x10" or similar on trace, etc. – Min of 6 in perspective, other views may be top, side, front views, elevations.

Week 2: Articulate (draw) Design choices, use a grid or other control system, drill down on your idea(s) to refine the ideas you feel are strongest.

Week 3: Layout and Emotive/Persuasive Style Rendering for Presentation

DELIVERABLES

3 - 11 x 17 Sheets

1 - Analysis of type and Inspiration points

1 - Process studies

1 - Final Emotive/Persuasive Image

Paper orientation is up to the student and the needs of their particular design.

You must have:

1 - three-quarter view of your vehicle,

1 - detail view such as a front or rear quarter light detail, and

1 - interior view of the vehicle cockpit. 1- or 2-pt perspective (3-pt is welcome).

STUDENT LEARNING OBJECTIVES (SLOs)

  1. Challenge students to make choices and develop surface changes
based on core shade and rendering logic.
  2. Challenge students to commit to strong line development.
  3. Challenge student's understanding and development of highly
    organic and complex surface changes.
  4. Challenge student's imagination.

GRADING AND EVALUATION RUBRIC

The following Rubric will apply in assessment of the student's work product, presentation, and/or process:

* Estimate only. See instructor and calendar for specific due dates. Summer Session schedule is more compressed with one week equal to approximately two and half semester weeks.
