DESN 230 — VISUALIZATION FOR INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE  |  FALL 2019  |  T/TH 1:00–3:45PM  | RM#

P1a | VIGNETTES - NAPKIN SKETCH COMPETITION

TIMEFRAME

3 weeks (Summer week 6)*

PROJECT OVERVIEW

There are two (2) parts to this assignment. Read all of the assignment.

PART 1. SKETCHING IN INK

The cocktail napkin has for generations been among the most immediate means to exploring an idea. They are immediately available when dining out and therefore a very accessible means for jotting down a concept. Due to the absorbent nature of a napkin paper, the designer is challenged by the medium using the most fundamental of tools, the ball-point or fluid ink pen.

In recent years Architectural Record Magazine has held a Napkins Sketching competition open to all.

For this assignment students will compete in the competition by submitting 6 napkin sketches.

https://www.architecturalrecord.com/cocktail-napkin-sketch-contest-2018

Be sure to review previous years' winners.

As this is a prominent, internationally recognized architectural magazine, the focus of your sketches will need to have an architectural focus and theme and you are being challenged to capture the life, nature, character of LA or SoCal in your work. See list provided below. Use ONE (or more) of the significant SoCal landmark buildings/place, if at all possible, do a site visit (on your time) and take your own photographs, however given our short timeframe, images found online are fine source material.

GETTING STARTED

Read the competition Guidelines thoroughly.

Obtain a stack of WHITE "cocktail" napkins which fit the required format for the competition; re-read the competition requirements. Non-compliant napkins will result in automatic C grade or lower, NO EXCEPTIONS.

Choose a theme you'd like to explore in your sketches, see below for ideas.

Get to drawing!

Pen & Ink, Ball-point, etc. ONLY. NO COLOR. Use of color will result in a minimum of a letter grade deduction.

You MUST submit 6 sketches, REQUIRED. Any less will result in a letter grade deduction for each napkin.

Do not work from CG Model images. Photography or drawings only.

Do not include people in your sketches UNLESS you can do competent Architectural style figures, no exceptions.

DELIVERABLES / PRESENTATION

PART 1 is due to my office (HSD 109) by Noon (12:00pm), Wednesday, September 5, 2016, with proper postage. This is not a class day. Failure to submit will result in a minimum of one letter grade mark down.

Fill out the Entry Form. Note, you should select "Other" under Job Function and write "Student".

Prepare a postage paid envelope for your submission. Go to the Post Office and have 6 napkins, entry form, and adequately sized envelope, weighed and apply correct postage. Failure to submit
will result in a D or lower grade, NO EXCEPTIONS.

Your sketches, entry form, and envelope addressed and postage applied, ready to go to the post office. Incomplete, unprepared and late will result in an automatic letter grade reduction.

PRIOR to submitting in the mail, Document, ie. Photograph or better, Scan, your Studies and FINAL submission work for presentation and/or use for PART 2 of this assignment.

11x17" presentation of your 6 napkins sketches that are being submitted for the competitions
using Photoshop for layout, prepared for Public Display.

ALTERNATIVE IDEAS/CONCEPTS WHICH MAY BE CONSIDERED

  • A specific, and visually significant place you've been to or are inspired by such as if you have traveled somewhere such as Paris, Barcelona, Prague, Vienna, London, Berlin, Buenos Aires, Saigon, Beijing, Pnom Penh, Sydney, etc., AND discovered and have photos of significant modern works or traditional, then this may be proposed,
  • Geometric abstractions may be considered but should have an architectural theme and character to them,
  • Futuristic Concepts like the HyperLoop, Mars/Moon Colony, Space Elevator, etc.,
  • Exploded assembly diagram of a building system,
  • Reference to a design luminary. See my Online Resources page, Pinterest, or another source,
  • Alternates may be proposed, selectively,
  • Capture the magnificence, splendor, and beautiful interlacing of the freeway interchanges, something quintessentially LA,
  • Chris Burden sculptures at LACMA,
  • The Sculpture work of Richard Serra, others with an Architectural impact may be considered,
  • Oil Rigs
  • Bridges
  • The Port of Long Beach / Port of LA crane structures or containers
