DESN 255 — INTRO TO COMPUTER GRAPHICS I  |  FALL 2020  |  TTH 1:00–3:45PM  |  ONLINE (AMI)

REMINDER / ADVICE !!

This is a "Skill-building" class (as defined by department leadership). Focus on developing your VISUAL COMMUNICATION skills (sketching, rendering, etc.)
and confidence, first and foremost. I am here to guide, coach, and assist you, and assess a value to the work product you create, but not
do your work for you.

"Don't cling to a mistake just because you spent a lot of time making it" -unknown

There's no such thing as talent, just discipline and commitment. Period. No excuses.

or do not." —Yoda

As you can see in the example below of graphic design and illustration for a HOW Magazine cover, it's common practice for an initial "comp" to be rough, but you have to have the skills to refine your work to make it professional, and most effective.

About Me. Faculty Page and Studio LaForte...

1. Zoom Profile Portrait Photo

2. HOMEWORK: GETTING STARTED

This semester we're going to work our way through a brief Brand Standards Guideline book, weaving content created in Illustrator and Photoshop into the InDesign book layout.

Thursday, Aug 27

HOMEWORK: Along your daily commute there are likely dozens of small local businesses you pass. They usually have very modest marketing budgets and could greatly benefit from a coordinated design strategy.

Choose a small local business that is not a large regional, national, or international business or franchise to use as your case-study client for the course of the semester.

We will create a very basic Brand Standards Book for the business and learn an introductory-to-intermediate level of Adobe Creative Suite's InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Acrobat. Students will take on creating or redesigning their client's logo, apply this to stationery, promo collateral, packaging and/or product design, signage, and more, all along indicating constraints for proper and improper usages, establish typefaces, colors, etc.

Watch and Discuss.

NO DECORATING!

GOOD DESIGN IS NOT DECORATION.
GOOD DESIGN IS ROOTED IN STRUCTURAL LOGIC!

KEEP THE FOCUS ON YOUR WORK. Decorative treatments don't add visual interest to your book, they are a distraction from the content. Good design virtually disappears, it doesn't scream for attention; almost always the sign of a bad design(er). You may think it looks boring, it might just be more patient and mature, AND more easily accessed by your viewer.
