ILLUSTRATOR RENDERING

PROJECT OVERVIEW

There are many times when we need artwork that is scalable without degradation or loss in quality, while the file size remains relatively modest. Vector art has many advantages over pixel-based (ie. Photoshop) rendering, and many drawbacks as well. There is no one-app for everything solution, yet.

Illustrator also allows us to preserve the editing ability of our vector drawings produced from AutoCad, Sketchup, Solid Works, StudioMax, or any other vector-based program.

For your client, you will need to develop a few drawings/renderings PROPOSING design changes, or something new all together.

Interior Designers, perhaps you'd like to redesign the shop and would need to show a longitudinal elevation and a floor plan. It's ok if you don't have specific dimensions, you can estimate.

Industrial Designers, consider proposing a new product or packaging design for your client. You will need to produce MULTIPLE orthographics showing this product/package from each of it's ortho views (top, front, bottom, two sides). Use the traditional/classic organization as shown.

DELIVERABLES

PDF of your design inserted into your Brand Identity Standards Guideline book, shown in "Spreads" format.

Submit to your assigned folder on Dropbox.com (not Beachboard's dropbox).

Name the file according to the filenaming standard indicated on the Syllabus, Section 10.5.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

  1. Students will gain an ability to design with vector graphics using Adobe Illustrator,
  2. Students will gain an understanding of scalable vector art versus pixel-based artwork,
  3. Students will build art directly within the program for concept presentation,
  4. Students will add to their understanding of including artwork in InDesign layouts,
  5. Students will gain confidence with this vector-based artwork.

For the sequence below, from DESN 280 - Production Materials and Technical Processes, for an entire book, use InDesign to coordinate the book layout. DO NOT use Illustrator for your book layout, just for the individual illustration graphics.

ARCHITECTURE AND INTERIOR DESIGN

We often will pull a PDF from AutoCAD and then render the elevations in Illustrator (below). Much depends on the workflow pipeline and phase of the project though, and some is changing with new software capabilities of Revit, ArchiCAD, and Sketchup.

PACKAGING DESIGN

Simple to complex packaging design comps can often be created in Illustrator before going to a 3D application.

Box design comp for HexClad

The most common application in packaging design is using Illustrator for die-cut templates in which you can then set your logo and other graphic art into the panels. Whether complex (below top), or simple (belew), Illustrator is produces "Print Ready" vector art for the perfect finish.
