PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Individual

Using Comparative Research Methodology, engage in interdisciplinary and multi-media research to identify related outcomes and support conclusions.

Students may represent products, services, and/or practices as discovered through interviews and research.

Design case-studies should provide the foundation of analysis as they are reported through the media of other disciplines.

Include comparative written analysis of contemporary and historical texts.

Be specific!

How many senses can we engage on this challenge?

Ask, what if it did...(hint: more)?

(SLOs 1,2,3,4,5)

Case-study counterpoint, the un-designed website...

  • Financial Investment Industry
  • Berkshire Hathaway vs Davis Funds vs
Icon Advisors vs Vanguard vs Fidelity
(there are many more fund management firms)
  • Compare across another industry. Considerations may include museums, architecture firms, engineering firms, industrial suppliers, etc. Don't hesitate to go outside our more commonly known/seen businesses such as Starbucks vs Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf vs Peet's Coffee vs Philz Coffee, etc.

PROCESS & DELIVERABLES

All projects must include:

Student name, project name, project title, instructor name,
course name, and date.

  1. Report (document)
  2. Prototypes (making physical studies)
  3. Images (photography, generally)
  4. Graphics (charts, maps, diagrams)
  5. Media (audio-video product)

Part 1: Case Study Analysis (1 week)

  • Create a single page Case-study Analysis of 3 different
designed communication media (may or may not be "design" industry specific). Blogs are an online medium only.
  • Include screen shots, short description, and appropriateness
of the medium for your presentation topic.
  • Include in your analysis the GRID SYSTEM present. Use cyan or magenta lines, .5pt or thinner.

Part 2: Multi-Media blog-style or magazine-style article (1 week)

  • Using content from your in-class presentation, and additional material
as necessary, Create a magazine/blog style article that looks EXACTLY like the case-study example you’ve selected as most appropriate for
    your topic.
  • The project should be 1000 words or equal to that in information
    and depth.

PART 1 EXAMPLE

Part 1: Case Study AnalysisCase Study 1: IDSAFrom the IDSA website, articles link to content from other locations. In this example, an article on Apple wearables linked to an article on Digital Trends. This format has many advertisements, multi-media content which balances the copy and images supporting the text content. For my topic, ________________, case study _____________ is the most appropriate medium to best communicate the information I've researched thus far. My topic is (more/less) visual and (more/less) research-heavy, therefore it fits to the format of this case study. The audience my topic would most likely attract would include ______________, _____________, and ___________________. This design communication medium reaches that audience and is well suited to my topic.Case Study 2: Design MilkThe Design Milk website is heavy on images and light on copy. There is a lot of ad space, but it is well-formatted and consistent with the site content. The site frequently puts opportunities to share content or links to sites where more detail on products can be obtained.Case Study 3: FastCo, DesignOn the FastCo Design website, information is primarily copy and is supported by images. The site has a more critical and journalistic position and is often the source for other design platforms. Much of the design writing is supported by cutting-edge research and leading voices in the discipline.Student NameProject NameProject TitleInstructor's NameCourse NameDateANALYSISCONCLUSION

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

1. Develop content for design communication based on research and understanding of contemporary design issues as demonstrated in multi-media and written assignments.

2. Demonstrate understanding of Genre and Disciplinary Conventions through writing projects specific to the discipline of design as demonstrated through appropriate writing styles across a range of discipline specific communication tools.

3. Evaluate influence of context and assumptions on the cultural, social, environmental and economic factors that affect contemporary design as demonstrated through creation of communication tools customized to
meet design project demands.

4. Develop conclusions and evaluate related outcomes of the interdisciplinary context of design as demonstrated through projects addressing applied design in an interdisciplinary context.

5. Demonstrate existing knowledge, research or views from previous design courses and experience as demonstrated through comparisons to design-specific historical and experiential references.
