DESN 132B — PERSP & RENDERING SYSTEMS II | SPR 2020 | M/W 1:00–3:45PM | HSD105
For this assignment, all students will use Ducati Motorcycles as their client and will operate as if they are the designers of very specific concentration areas.
This assignment provides students with their choice of several design options. Choose the direction that most closely fits your area of design concentration.
All students will need to use a 2-PT Perspective Grid or Pull-down System (demonstrated, and Chapter 3 in our assigned book Perspective and Sketching for Designers) to control your perspective layout and proportions. There are a variety of systems used by designers that have some variation, but all good grids generate a good proportioning and control system for drawing. Use a system you're most familiar and/or confident with.

PROJECT OVERVIEW
This option is geared to the BS Industrial Design students.
See main page for SLOs, Grading & Evaluation Rubric, Schedule,
and Brand Elements.
For this assignment, you will need to design Ducati's next generation ELECTRIC bike (highly complex). (ID-centered project).
This option allows students with an interest in transportation design
to develop their skills.
Generate a Model name for the motorcycle line. Hint, Ducati often uses an Italian name, like Diavel, Multi-strada, etc, or a code number like the 996.

Current Ducati models can be found on the company's website here:

Orthographic CAD drawings can be found on The Blueprints' website in a variety of vector formats:

Note, many are not the current models, but should still provide good reference for proportions.
Current market-leading electric bike companies are: Brammo Empulse, Zero, Victory. Following suit are Honda, Yamaha, and Harley Davidson.

METHODOLOGY
Here's a secret formula for Getting Started! Notice the relationship of a 30-60-90 triangle and how the "steering head tube" angle is very close to
30 degrees off vertical.
Notice also, you can use the wheels as a way of identifying a general
sense of the length and stance of the bike.

WATCH THESE VIDEOS TO GET STARTED
These videos will help you get started with understanding proportions and how to translate from one view to another, and not get bogged down in trying to plot points in a grid. Try to develop your intuition along with logic of the perspective system.

STEP 1
Create an 11x17" Inspiration, Mood, Client Study panel, like we did on Project 1.
STEP 2
20 studies, including perspectives, side views, top views, and front views. Explore. Some of my own sketches on trace paper. 2 Sheets like the one shown below.
Final renderings laid out for presentaion.
STEP 2
Start rendering studies early as well. Don't wait do your final piece to start exploring surface and light logic in color. I like to render into my graphite line work, on Marker Paper, then, as the rendering develops, begin working in stronger line depth with ink pens and/or black Prismacolor Pencil.
STEP 3
Finished renderings with strong refinement. Some professional sketching and rendering examples from various sources below.
